Career expo later this month for high school students

This year’s event is targeting 60 exhibitors, 800 youth and has plans to provide nine different breakout session topics and two walking tours.

SOUTH GEORGIAN BAY YOUTH CAREER EXPO

In an effort to further engage youth and showcase the extensive range of jobs and careers in South Georgian Bay, several community groups have once again partnered to put together the fourth annual South Georgian Bay Youth Career Expo. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 30, 2019, at Blue Mountain Resort, Village Conference Centre.

This year’s event is targeting 60 exhibitors, 800 youth and has plans to provide nine different breakout session topics and two walking tours. The event sends out invitations to public, Catholic and private high schools in the South Georgian Bay region. Various Grade 10, 11 and 12 students/classes are invited to attend.

The career expo targets various employment sectors. Participating sectors include advanced manufacturing, automotive, aviation, communications, education, emergency services, employment resources, engineering, entrepreneurship services, finance, food service, health and wellness, life science, the military, retail, skilled trades, technology, tourism and more. Exhibitors that hire students, bring on co-op students or are looking for student volunteers are also clearly identified in the career expo area.

The current planned breakout sessions running throughout the day include Talking Post-Secondary, Talking Trades, an OSAP Presentation, Building A Powerful Digital Brand, Be Your Own Boss, Take Your BS (backstory) and turn it into FU (future undertaking), Mindfulness, Military Careers and Job Interview Practice Opportunities. In addition, there will be walking tours conducted by Blue Mountain Resorts and the Blue Mountain Village Association, with a focus on student opportunity.

The event committee includes volunteers, representatives from Collingwood Collegiate Institute, Jean Vanier Catholic High School, the SGB campus of Georgian College, Tracks, the Rural Ontario Medical Program, Blue Mountain Resort, the Town of The Blue Mountains and the South Georgian Bay Small Business Enterprise Centre.

The South Georgian Bay Youth Career Expo aims to not only showcase regional employment opportunities but also to expose our youth to a host of interesting and viable career choices that will bring them back to Live, Work and Play in South Georgian Bay.
