NEWS RELEASE
TOWN OF COLLINGWOOD
*************************
The Town of Collingwood would like to hear from you regarding potential cannabis retail stores in town.

On Oct. 17, 2018, the use of cannabis became legal in Canada. In Ontario, cannabis can only be purchased from the online Ontario Cannabis Store. Retail outlets (storefronts) will be permitted effective April 1, 2019 through a tightly regulated licensing process by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.

Municipalities that permit retail establishments in their communities will be provided additional government funding. Municipalities that choose not to permit retail outlets in their municipalities must make that decision prior to Jan. 22, 2019.

"On behalf of Council we are seeking the public's input to assist Council in making the decision whether to opt-in or opt-out of having retail cannabis stores in our town," said Clerk, Sara Almas. "This is an important decision and that’s why Council recommended public consultation. Please complete the survey and have your say."

In addition to the survey, stakeholder sessions are being scheduled. Staff are also encouraging the public to submit their comments in writing to [email protected]. All submissions will be provided to Council prior to making their decision in early January.

For further information and to access the survey please visit the website. Hard copies of the survey are also available at Town Hall, 97 Hurontario Street, Collingwood.

Survey deadline is 12 p.m. Dec. 31, 2018.
