Battle of the birds as Fighting Owls take down Nighthawks on the gridiron

Collingwood Collegiate Institute's senior football team won the quarterfinal game against Orillia today for a spot in the SCAA semifinals

Two high-school football staved off elimination and lived to fight another die with victories Tuesday in Simcoe County Athletic Association (SCAA) senior action.

Quarterfinal games were played in Collingwood, with the Fighting Owls hosted the Orillia Nighthawks, and Barrie, with the Bear Creek Kodiaks took on Alliston's Banting Marauders.

The Bear Creek Kodiaks overcame a 12-7 deficit at halftime to defeat the Marauders, 31-18, while Collingwood squeezed past Orillia, 15-13.

Today's action set up the SCAA semifinal games, which will be played on Friday.

The Kodiaks (4-2) will face the Barrie North Vikings (5-1) in one of the semifinal games, with

Collingwood (3-3) will face the undefeated Eastview Wildcats (6-0) at noon at J.C. Massie Field at Georgian College, while the Barrie North Vikings will take on the Kodiaks at 2 p.m. not far away at the Grove Street East high school.

The winners of those games will meet in the SCAA championship game on Nov. 7 at 2 p.m., at J.C. Massie Field.

The SCAA champion advances to the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association (GBSSA) title game against the St. Joan of Arc Knights, the champions from the Catholic School Athletics of Simcoe County (CSASC). That game will be played on Nov. 14 at J.C. Massie Field in another 2 p.m. kickoff.

Meanwhile, in SCAA junior action, the quarterfinals were played on Monday. Nantyr Shores downed Orillia, 37-1, down in Innisfil, while Bear Creek blanked Barrie North, 21-0. Collingwood also shut out Innisdale, 22-0, and Eastview was victorious over Nottawasaga Pines, 35-6.

The SCAA junior semifinals will be played Thursday, with Bear Creek taking on Collingwood, and Nantyr Shores playing Eastview at J.C. Massie Field in the other match-up. The SCAA junior final will be played Nov. 7, followed by the GBSSA championship game on Nov. 13.
