Barrie police have released a sketch of a male suspect wanted in connection to a sexual assault last week on Cygnus Crescent, near Ardagh Road and Mapleton Avenue.

City police confirmed this afternoon that the assault was "sexual in nature."

A dedicated tip line has been established and anyone with information is "strongly encouraged" to contact authorities at 705-725-0501.

The homeowner, a woman in her early 30s, was assaulted following a break-in around 3 a.m. on Wednesday, April 3.

According to police, the homeowner awoke to let a family pet out into the yard. The homeowner was then confronted by an unknown male who forced his way into the residence.

The woman was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

The investigation is ongoing.

A description of the suspect:

  • Male, white, late 30s to early 40s, 5’8-5’10’ tall, heavy stocky build, brown eyes, dark buzz cut style hair and a scruffy dark beard
  • Wearing blue jeans and a brown zippered hoodie.

Police are also reminding people to be aware of their personal safety at all times and, where possible, to avoid dark areas unless artificial lighting is available, especially during the overnight hours.

"Whenever we have a situation like this in the city, there's always going to be a heightened level of vigilance," said Barrie police corporate communications co-ordinator Peter Leon, who advised people to use a flashlight or illuminate the area when travelling in darkened places.
