A woman was airlifted to a Toronto hospital after Collingwood Fire crews pulled her from a burning apartment unit.
Deputy Fire Chief Dan Thurman said a call came in at approximately 8:30 a.m. reporting fire in a unit on the second floor of Georgian Gables apartment building on Erie Street.
Upon arrival, crews noted smoke coming from the second floor and were alerted there was possibly a person inside the burning unit.
Thurman said crews entered the unit and discovered an unconscious female. They rescued her from the unit and paramedics took her to Collingwood General and Marine Hospital. She was airlifted to a Toronto hospital, and Thurman said her condition is serious.
Thurman has called the Ontario Fire Marshall's office to inform them of the fire causing serious injuries.
The building was evacuated, and police set up a temporary shelter at an adjacent church for residents of the building. Fire crews performed primary and secondary inspections of each unit before allowing residents back into their units.
He said accessibility was an issue and there were a number of residents who had to remain in their units until fire crews came for them. The elevator can only be used by fire crews in an evacuation.
Thurman said the cause is not yet determined, but is believed to be cooking-related.
