Auxiliary members of the Collingwood and The Blue Mountains detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have been busy this past month raising awareness by taking aim at the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) scam which continues to defraud residents of their hard earned money.

In an effort to raise awareness of this type of scam, Auxiliary OPP members attended and distributed a fact sheet to local businesses that sell gift cards or provide money wiring services.

This fact sheet contained information on the CRA scam and will be made available to customers who the store employee(s) suspect they may have been contacted by a scammer and are possibly being defrauded.

The flyer was used at a local store to stop a scam from occurring at the point of purchase. The customer was actually on the phone with the fraudster while purchasing a large number of gift cards when the customer was stopped by the cashier/employee at point of sale and provided with the fact sheet.

This is when the customer realized that they had been targeted by a fraudster and hung up the phone.

The OPP would like to thank the local businesses participating to reduce this type of victimization or, ultimately, eliminate it entirely.
