Four people remain in serious but stable condition after a two-vehicle crash involving a police pursuit that shut down part of County Road 88 for nearly 10 hours on Tuesday.

A press release from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which is investigating the incident, initially stated five people were involved in the crash, but only four were, according to a press release issued Wednesday.

The 32-year-old male driver of the vehicle that was pursued by South Simcoe police, and his 31-year-old and 38-year-old male passengers were taken to hospital, where they remain.

The SIU have not released information on the reason for the pursuit or whether any charges have been laid.

South Simcoe police officers began investigating a vehicle at the Tanger Outlets mall in the Cookstown area around 5:30 p.m. July 24. When it left the parking lot, officers followed.

The vehicle went eastbound on Highway 89, southbound on 10 Sideroad and then westbound on County Road 88.
East of Highway 400, the vehicle collided with a pickup truck that was travelling eastbound.

The 54-year-old male driver of the pickup truck was also taken to hospital, where he remains.

Four investigators, three forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to this incident. One subject officer and one witness officer have also been designated, according to the SIU.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529, and anyone with video evidence is asked to upload the video through the SIU website.

The SIU investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

The SIU’s director must decide whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in these incidents and either lay a criminal charge against the officer or close the file without any charges being laid, and then report the results to the attorney general.
