Grey Bruce Health Unit has reported 39 new COVID cases confirmed in the last 24 hours through limited PCR testing.

The new cases include one person from The Blue Mountains and three from Grey Highlands.

However, current provincial testing rules restrict lab testing to eligible groups living or working in high-risk congregate care settings or for those who are hospitalized. Because of this, the number of cases picked up by testing is an under-representation of COVID cases and transmission in Grey-Bruce region and the province.

There are currently 12 people from Grey and Bruce Counties hospitalized within the region because of COVID-19 and three people are hospitalized outside of the region.

The health unit has reported one new death this week, bringing the total number of deaths of Grey Bruce residents to 28 since the pandemic began.

To date, the Grey Bruce Health Unit has reported 5,136 lab-confirmed COVID cases and 4,855 recoveries.

An outbreak at the Owen Sound hospital is over, but the health unit declared an outbreak at Grey Bruce Health Services' Wiarton site.

There are 12 long-term care/retirement homes in the region currently in outbreak, including Errinrun Retirement and Nursing Home in Thornbury and Grey Gables in Markdale.

The health unit reported more than 9,000 doses of COVID vaccine was given out last week in the region, and there are now more people with three doses of vaccine than in any other vaccination group.

As of Jan. 19, 47 per cent of the eligible population in the region had three doses or more of COVID vaccine, and 30 per cent of the eligible population had two doses. About 19 per cent of the region's eligible population (over four years old) is unvaccinated.
