CollingwoodToday welcomes letters to the editor at [email protected]. Please include your daytime phone number and address (for verification of authorship, not publication). The following letter is in response to an article regarding funding for Highway 26 improvements, published April 12.

First off, congratulation to the town for securing the funding for the subject works. However, does this story imply that the town will only perform necessary repairs when it secures significant contribution from the province?

All infrastructure improvements are welcome and serve the town and its visitors well but one cannot read this and not ask why the town is not repairing, as a matter of urgency, the worst piece of road in Collingwood, i.e., the section of High Street between First and Fifth Street which is a well-used alternative to route 26 by locals and visitors alike.

The condition of this piece of road is a disgrace and outright dangerous to all vehicles and especially cycle and motorcycles. Road users will frequently make potentially dangerous manoeuvres to avoid the broken carriageway and risk of potential damage to their vehicle.

This is not a major design and build project, this is a matter of simply replacing the inappropriate concrete pavement with a proper flexible pavement and should be within the town's capacity as a maintainer of its roadways.
