LETTER: Former councillor says street patios once taboo topic

Dave Labelle, a former councillor, recalls being told street patios were too dangerous to consider
Espresso Post Patio
Espresso Post in downtown Collingwood has installed their sidewalk patio with fewer tables and chairs this year. It opened today, June 12. Erika Engel/CollingwoodToday

The following letter was submitted by Dave Labelle, former councillor (elected in 2006) for the Town of Collingwood. His letter is in response to an article about a town survey asking if residents want to keep expanded patios on downtown street parking areas.

Editor,

I had to laugh when I read the poll to keep the enlarged patios on the streets.

My council wanted to allow patios against the streets downtown and we were harassed and voted out. People were "going die from wayward drivers." Funny how things change.

The downtown should be for people. The only problem is parking. A tiered lot beside the arena in the town lot is perfect. I also invited the engineer that tuned Maple Leaf Gardens into Loblaws, university and parking and he agreed that the actual Eddie Bush Arena is perfect for indoor parking.

Planning, planning, planning.

That's just my opinion.
