The following letter was submitted in response an article entitled: Former councillor puts name forward for council seat.

While never having the occasion to personally meet most members (present and past) of Collingwood council, it is safe to say we need a new direction. I am sure these councillors gave it their best. I am also sure they are all well-intentioned people.

The greatest predictor of the future is the past.

Accordingly, it would be pretty foolish to re-elect any past or present councillors and expect any meaningful change to occur. It just isn’t going to happen. It never has and never will.

CollingwoodToday has an article announcing a new candidate from the very council who was the subject of the Collingwood judicial inquiry. Let’s not go in that direction again.

The town debt load is high. We have no extra water. We have extra traffic and nowhere to park. We have high development fees, expensive local government and about 30 per cent of your tax dollars are going to police and fire.

Why can’t we have a low-cost environment? Shouldn’t there be some economy of scale in our recent growth?

Let’s give somebody else the opportunity to give it the old college try. Clearly, we need a change.
