While Peter Fracassi may be driven by his faith, he hopes he can help improve local schools while encouraging a more well-rounded approach to education.

Fracassi was recently acclaimed as the trustee for the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB) for Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Springwater and Clearview townships when he put his name forward and ran unopposed.

“My primary goal for becoming a Catholic school board trustee is to help instill the teachings of Christ in all our schools as well as help our students become more environmentally responsible, socially conscious and successful in all their endeavours,” says Fracassi.

Fracassi is a retired teacher who recently moved to Springwater after teaching for 37 years with the Toronto School Board. While there, he taught programs for autistic and special needs students.

“Through our common faith, I want to assist our students in becoming not only highly educated but good people who assist and help others,” he says.

In regards to dollars and cents, Fracassi says he sees a need for constant communication between the federal, provincial and municipal levels of government.

“As the local trustee, I aim to open up all lines of dialogue with the province and the local MP,” he says. “I will make the needs of the SMCDSB known to the MP and I will establish a working relationship with the province, in addressing the needs of the SMCDSB.”

As Fracassi is new to the area, he is hoping for guidance from local parents, staff and students from the two Collingwood schools in his purview (Jean Vanier Catholic High School and St. Mary’s Catholic School) on how they want to be represented.

“I would like to visit the two schools and talk to the staff, students and parents to see how I can assist to meet their goals,” he says. “I would also like to look at areas of concern and troubleshoot with the community on resolving such issues.”

He has plans to visit the two schools after the election is over and he can meet with the other elected SMCDSB trustees.
