Liberal Lorne Kenney hoping for Liberal-NDP coalition

Kenney finished second place in Simcoe-Grey behind Conservative Terry Dowdall

Simcoe-Grey’s second-place finisher in tonight’s election said he has “mixed emotions” about the national and local results.

“It looks as though we’re headed for a Liberal-NDP minority government,” said Kenney during his election night party at Boston Pizza in Collingwood. “The form that would take, I can’t begin to predict, but it looks like it can be a stable minority government. And certainly, that represents some real advantage to Canada.”

He said the local results are “the usual story.”

“It’s probably the same scenario where we have a Liberal north end and a not so Liberal south end,” said Kenney. “We thought that the arrival of many, many new people from the GTA to new neighbourhoods would produce a different outcome.”

Conservative candidate Terry Dowdall had nearly 26,000 votes with about 40 more polls to report. Kenney had 19,538.

“I would have obviously preferred a slightly different outcome, but there you go,” said Kenney.

He said he sees no reason why the Liberals and NDP can’t work together for a coalition.

“It won’t be easily done, but it’s possible,” said Kenney. “In historical terms, that’s when we’ve made some really good progress.”

The Liberal party won 156 seats, the Conservatives won 121, the Bloc took 32, the NDP won 25, and the Green Party won 3. There was one independent elected.

In Simcoe-Grey, the Green Party is heading toward a third-place finish with close to 8,000 votes, the NDP is behind them at 7,000 votes.
