LETTER: Sixth St. needs sidewalks on both sides

Resident worried about too many people crossing bike lanes and traffic to get to sidewalk

An alternate design proposal for the Sixth St. reconstruction project was put forward this week by cycling advocate Justin Jones.

I feel there will be pedestrian safety concerns for the proposed change for Sixth St. between High and Hurontario Streets.

While I can see the logic to the separation, the risk will be to anyone living on the south side.

Logic says everyone should cross at an intersection, but many people won’t. Whether it’s due to distance or weather or any other reason, people will have traffic and bicycle lanes to cross.

I think there should still be a sidewalk on the south side.

I don’t think there needs to be a huge separation between bicycles and pedestrians. And it would allow the more logical crossing at an intersection.

Not all intersections are four-way stops so there’s still a significant distance for pedestrians to plan their crossings depending where they enter the street and winter complications for pedestrians and cyclists.

With all this extra traffic space and separation and lack of additional and allowed parking, I hope anyone on the street has sufficient room for cars in driveways, especially with winter snow.
